Neutron Stars versus White Dwarfs an Example of the Topic All Posts by

Neutron Stars versus White Dwarfs Neutron stars are extremely dense: they are only 10 kilometers or so in size, but have the mass of an average star (usually about 1.5 times more massive than our Sun). Need essay sample on "Neutron Stars versus White Dwarfs" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed A single [neutron star] can hold the mass of up to 5 suns in a sphere about 12 kilometers across (Krieger 2006). Neutron stars were supergiant stars whose exploded ultradense cores becom[e] neutron stars the size of a small town (Kaler, Jim. Ask Astro. Astronomy, 32, Issue 1. 2004). (This phenomena can also create a black hole.) Neutron stars are made of neutrons. Their superdense status is responsible for some of the most exotic phenomenon in the universe, such as pulsars. In 2006, astronomers discovered a densely packed sphere of neutrons spinning so fast that its equator may whirl at 15% the speed of light. The object breaks a 23-year-old record for fastest stellar spin by a sizeable margin (Irion 2006.) Neutron stars have consumed all of their own fuel and so tap into other sources for energy. Thanks to this efficient release of gravitational energy, the temperature at the center of a newborn neutron star can reach 500 billion kelvins Its likely that neutron stars are born magnetized A newborn neutron star is incredibly hot -- it is, after all, the surviving core of a star that has just collapsed and exploded as a supernova. Gravitational energy released during the star's collapse represents almost 10 percent of its rest-mass energy... Rotation offers another energy source for neutron stars. They spin rapidly at birth because the collapsing pre-supernova star "spins up"-- much as a spinning ice skater does when she pulls in her armsSome neutron stars do produce energy by thermonuclear fusion on their surfaces. (Sigg 2005). Both white dwarfs and neutron stars are the remnants of stars about the size of our sun. Neither are sustained via nuclear reactions at the core. The matter in both objects is compressed to extreme densities, and therefore both are useful for studying matter at high energies. White dwarfs are dim; neutron stars are invisible, but they all have masses similar to the sun. Like a neutron star, a white dwarf has no energy source other than what is left over from its birth. White dwarfs are dead stars, and, like neutron stars, are incapable of nuclear reactions. Also like neutron stars, they are incredibly dense. Neutron stars and massive white dwarfs can sometimes, as a result of a close encounter, create an x-ray-emitting binary pair (Morledge, 2002). Both neutron stars and white dwarfs are useful for studying matter at high densities. A typical white dwarf is a little larger than Earth but has 60 percent the mass of the Sun. It forms after a star that is born with less than eight times the Sun's mass expands into a red giant. The red giant eventually casts off its atmosphere, exposing the hot, dense core -- the white dwarf. A white dwarf does not burn nuclear fuel, as the Sun and other stars do; instead, it shines because it is hot. Since white dwarfs no longer generate energy, their evolution resembles the fading fortunes these stars have faced during the 20th century: They start off hot and bright but soon cool and fade (Croswell, 1996.) White dwarfs theoretically turn to black dwarfs, but no such star exists; it takes so long for the process to occur, that all white dwarfs are still evolving. References Ken Croswell, Ken. (1996). What Should Our Cholesterol Levels Be... essays

What Should Our Cholesterol Levels Be... essays What Should Our Cholesterol Levels Be, Ideally, and How Can We Control Our Cholesterol Without Prescription Drugs? At the moment, suppliers of anti-cholesterol drugs, such as Pfizer's Lipitor or Pravachol, are marketing their merchandise as the sole weapon available to combat the relentless onslaught of the known killer. This paper is devoted to educate those of us potentially duped by doctors with a quick hand on the prescription pad, and drug companies with a vested interest in our dependency. The American Heart Association defines cholesterol as a soft, waxy substance found among the lipids (fats) in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells (n. pag.). If one consumes too much cholesterol, it can harden into a plaque-like substance inside arteries and veins. This is a major contributor to heart disease. Although it is normal for every person to have cholesterol in their bodies, too much could wreak havoc on societys collective blood supply-while it is still in our bodies-by restricting its flow and causing otherwise preventable death. Stephen R. Yarnell, MD, and Fellow of The American College of Cardiology writes that unhealthy blood cholesterol levels are one of the major risk factors for heart disease-the No. 1 killer of American men and women (n. pag.). There are simple changes an individual can make in his or her lifestyle that can maintain balanced cholesterol levels. Why should you care about your cholesterol levels? Because the American Heart Association says that high cholesterol is a leading risk factor for heart disease (n. pag.). If there is too much cholesterol in the blood it can harden inside the veins. This will result in restricting the amount of blood flowing through them, ultimately causing a heart attack. If you take the time to care about your cholesterol levels, you could save your life. What is the "normal" or "ideal" blood cholesterol level? Stephen R. Yarnell, MD writes: "...

Vulnerabilities of Organizational Networks and Internets Coursework

Vulnerabilities of Organizational Networks and Internets - Coursework Example This paper analyses and studies the various security weaknesses which hampers the organization’s information system. A brief study of the technical and non technical measures and methods are listed which would ensure that the company or the organization is protected from any unauthorized access to their system. Definition and Impact of Vulnerability on an organization The Organization of Internet Safety defines security vulnerability as â€Å"security vulnerability is a flaw within a software system that can cause it to work contrary to is documented design and could be exploited to cause the system to violate its documented security policy† (Telang and Wattal, 2005, p2). Vulnerability is security weakness in the software or the hardware on a system or a server that can be attacked or gained access to, by an intruder. The weakness or the loophole can be physical, technical or network related (Kizza, 2007). In today’s tough and competitive marketplace, it is imper ative for all the organizations to have strong measures against all anticipated vulnerabilities. Companies stand a risk to lose time, money and may hamper its future growth, if the concept of vulnerability management is not adhered to and practiced. For example, a security defect in any software may cause loss of millions of dollars in terms of downtime, integrity issues and interrupting the growth of the organization (Brackin, 2003). Vulnerabilities of Organizational Networks There are various sources of system vulnerabilities. Poor design flow, improper use of the firewall, the nature of intruder activity, improper security management, no restriction in the usage of internet, improper implementation of the security appliances are some of the major causes of IT vulnerability. In an organization, the two major components of a computer system, hardware and software are quite vulnerable (Kizza, 2007). An organization uses the computers for almost each and every sphere of activity. Thi s enables the companies to have the ability to use and practice internet in their day to day operations. The most common cyber security vulnerability IT mangers are facing in terms of their software design flows. Software are more prone to security losses for their less complexity, involvement of the human factors, lack of security equipments while testing and implementing the software programs. The software professionals often have a rush to finish the product. There are some attention failures possible on the part of the professionals, for example, if they forget to add some security verification questions, it becomes accessible to many unauthorized ones. A software program may have many possible outcomes. It is important to choose the best fit and the correct to be used. There might be some malice professionals in the company. Many viruses, bugs are downloaded in software and then are circulated and transferred from one computer to another. Some security software are difficult to locate and used. The software product needs to be thoroughly tested under all possible circumstances as no software product can fit in all environments. In almost all the organizations, Local area networks (LANs) is being used and implemented in meeting data processing and to work in tandem with other companies in the global

Accounting Case Study - Essay Example There is a belief that poor branding identity is the root cause of declining market fortunes. In addition, its recent methods of retailing have been overcome by recent market shifts. Looking at the giant entrants as if the Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire depicts a total shift in retailing strategies. Perhaps the failure of the manufacturer to respond to market trends has largely caused the problem that is being currently mitigated. More importantly, the larger manufacturers have adopted the use of modern information technology and sophisticated inventory management systems. It is certain that deliberate steps need to be undertaken immediately. Apart from a shift of the marketing trends towards information technology, the company has failed to build a strong brand as the marketing forces become fierce. Today, the category suppliers have grown significantly that they command specific designs for manufacturers to produce. Evidently, the recent times has seen category supply, demand particular sizes and colors of goods being supplied. While Clearwater remains stagnant in the traditional retail systems, the market forces have overwhelmingly become unbearable. Besides, the problem has arisen because of untimely management decisions. In business, the management team should be vibrant and creative. Acting timely to respond to changing market patterns is critical in ensuring that a company is not forced out of the market. With a timely and a continuous product adjustment, the company would not be experiencing the current marketing doldrums. In addition, it is certain that the problem is solely a marketing and strategic step. One of the problem would have been solved before it became evident was branding, as a business grows that need to maintain a highly competitive manageable is crucial, management decisions should explore product and study market patterns with a view of making necessary

The Second Coming :: Second Coming

The Second Coming In his poem "The Second Coming," Yeats predicts cataclysmic changes about to be wrought upon human kind. He states, "Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;/Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world," (1511). This statement is in line with Modernistic thought of this time period. Modernistic writers felt that traditional teachings left something to be desired, and that it was time for change. There was a huge upheaval in religious beliefs and current religious convictions were being challenged with new scientific knowledge. Yeats foresees spiritual changes in the words, "Surely some revelation is at hand;/Surely the Second Coming is at hand..."(1511). The Modernistic period was also a time when questions were asked about the old, established, and customary beliefs. Writers attempted to challenge people to think about archaic ways of conduct, and to check the motivations behind their beliefs. Joseph Conrad stated in Heart of Darkness, "Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair,"(1377). He portrays in these lines the ugliness of Europeans treatment of another culture. He is challenging his reader to adopt another attitude, but does not ever tell his reader how to feel, another defining feature of literary Modernism. Conrad tells us about a Black man with a white cloth tied about his neck. Again he does not interpret this white cloth, but leaves it open to our interpretation, "He had tied a bit of white worsted round his neck - Why?"(1377). Conrad questions the motives o f white Europeans in Africa, repeatedly referring to their greed: ". . . weak-eyed devil of a rapacious and pitiless folly..."(1377). Conrad, in his statement about their building of a railway, "The cliff was not in the way or anything but this objectless blasting was all the work going on"(1376), asks his reader to observe the violence against a country, not only its people, but the actual land.

Stakeholder

This report is focusing mainly on the identification of stakeholders in the canadian rockies, asses their inetrests, goals, and priorities in a sustainable way, assessing the effectiveness of current strategies for stakeholders management, Analyse it, focus on the level of power of each stakeholder. And finally, look into what their stake is, every stakeholder have a stake for which its level of interest is attached. Stakeholder is the group or the body that can affect or be affected directly or indirectly by the action of the business as a whole Bleasdale Module class 3rd week, and Stakeholders Analysis (SA) is the â€Å"identification of a projects key stakeholders, an assessment of their interests and the ways in which these interests affect project riskiness and viability† (DfiD, 1995). Buttresing this point on Stakeholders Analysis, Grimble and welllard define stakeholders analysis as â€Å"a historical approach or procedure for gaining an understanding of a system and assesing the impact of changes to that system† cited in Hardy and Beeton: pg175. And Freeman’s 1984 book Strategic Management – A Stakeholder Approach is often cited as the pivotal study that gave the Stakeholder analysis its momentum as an issue of importance in the organisational context (Freeman and McVea, 2001; Kaler, 2004). Sustainable tourism can simply be defined as Therefore, Canadian Stakeholders are very important when Tourism is critically analysed in Canada, Stakeholders are the most essential group that deal directly with the tourism of any country, proceeding to analysing powerful stakeholders in canada ranging from the the Aboriginals which are the indiginous first people, the Canadian Governments, Tourists, Host Community, Media, British columbia state Governments, Local Authorities and National Park Authorities just to mention a few.
